A Look Back: Cocoa in Nigeria’s Golden Era

Every great nation stands on a foundation of food security. Without agriculture, there is no economy, no trade, and no stability. That’s why agriculture is more than farming.it is the true backbone of nations.

As Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug, the father of the Green Revolution, once said:

“If you desire peace, cultivate justice, but at the same time cultivate the fields to produce more bread; otherwise, there will be no peace.”

This reminds us that food and farming are deeply tied to national prosperity.

Food Security is National Security

A nation that cannot feed itself is vulnerable. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO, 2022), Africa loses nearly 40% of its food post-harvest, worsening hunger and poverty.

In Nigeria, rising food imports valued at over $10 billion annually (CBN, 2023) this show the urgent need to strengthen local agriculture. Strong food systems mean stable nations.

Agriculture and Job Creation in Nigeria

Agriculture remains one of the largest job creators. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2023), about 35% of Nigeria’s labour force is employed in the agricultural sector.

From crop cultivation to agro-processing, logistics, marketing, and exports, agriculture provides diverse opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship.

Agriculture as a Wealth Creator

Crops such as cocoa, cashew, sesame, and cotton generate billions in foreign exchange for Nigeria. When nations invest in value addition and exports, agriculture evolves from subsistence farming to a global wealth engine.

For instance, turning raw cocoa into chocolate or cashew into packaged snacks not only multiplies profits but also creates jobs and strengthens Nigeria’s trade position.

Agriculture Sustains Culture and Communities

Beyond food and money, agriculture sustains traditions, supports rural communities, and preserves cultural foods that strengthen national identity. Farming is not just economic .it is social and cultural heritage.

Agropreneurs are Nation Builders

As an agropreneur, you are not “just farming.” You are contributing to Nigeria’s stability, job creation, and future prosperity.
