A nursery is a place where seeds are planted, raised, nurtured, supply with the conditions for maximum development, and grown to the desired level before transplanting to the permanent site.

Some vegetables such as cabbage, onion, and tomatoes require lots of care during the early stages of development, so they need to be nursed/ nurtured and later transplanted as this gives a better survival ability.

Six Advantages of the nursery.

  1. Raising seeds in the nursery gives room for more time for the preparation of the main site. It also favors crop uniformity in the field at the end of the day.
  2. It’s possible to give adequate growth conditions to the crops.
  3. Makes it easier to give better care to the young plants against pests, diseases, unfavorable weather conditions such as heavy rain, high temperature, drought, and other things that could interfere with their well-being.
  4. It lessens field management costs as it gives room for land to be used efficiently.
  5. Sowing seeds in the nursery helps to economize the seed, especially when dealing with costly hybrids.
  6. Crops grown in the nurseries grow faster unlike the ones planted directly which mature slowly and take a longer time.

Nonetheless, there are things to put in place before going into raising vegetable seedlings to obtain an impressive result.

  • An area with well-drained soil, neutral pH level, loam to sandy loam, and rich in organic matter should be considered when selecting a site for nursery, please avoid waterlogged areas.
  • Choose a conserved area free of wild animals and pets.
  • Arrange the nursery in a way that water supply won’t be an issue.
  • Mix compost manure with the soil to obtain healthy and fertile soil.
  • After sowing, mulch the seedbeds, this will provide enough shade to the young plant, keep weeds away as well as retaining moisture.
  • The easiest and effective way to make nurseries is by making use of nursery trays and good growing media like cocopeat which are available with us at www.seedhub.ng/09065126356, just get in touch and farm with ease and happiness.
