The One Thing Holding Back Nigerian Agribusiness

Nigeria’s agribusiness sector is one of the fastest-growing in Africa, yet many agropreneurs still struggle to scale. Surprisingly, most failures aren’t due to pests or poor rainfall but poor business decisions.

Here are three common mistakes killing Nigeria’s agribusiness growth and how to fix them for long-term success.

  1. No Business Plan – Farming Without Direction

Jumping into farming without a plan is like driving blind. A farm business plan helps you define your goals, production costs, target market, and growth strategy. Without one, you’ll waste money and struggle to attract investors or loans.

A farm business plan gives your agribusiness structure and direction. It helps you define your goals, estimate your costs, identify your buyers, and plan for profit. Without one, you risk wasting resources and missing out on opportunities for funding or expansion.

Quick Fix:

Start small and simple. Write a one-page farm business plan outlining your:
•Budget (cost of seeds, fertilizers, labour, etc.)
•Expected yield (what you aim to harvest)
•Sales strategy (where and how you will sell your produce)
This clarity helps you stay organized and attract investors or loans down the line.

2. Poor Record Keeping – You Can’t Manage What You Don’t Measure

You cannot grow what you do not track. One of the biggest mistakes in Nigeria’s agribusiness sector is the lack of proper record keeping. Many farmers do not document their income, expenses, or production data making it impossible to know if their farm is truly profitable.

Without proper records, you’ll never truly know if your farm is making money. Tracking your daily income and expenses helps you identify profit leaks, plan better, and qualify for bank loans or grants.

Quick Fix:

• Use a notebook or spreadsheet to record daily expenses, from seeds and fertilizer to sales and wages.
•Alternatively, try free farm management apps like Farm Records or Crop tracker that make it easier to track farm activities digitally.

  1. Ignoring Market Research – Producing What No One Wants

Many farmers in Nigeria grow crops simply because others are doing it. Without market research, you risk producing goods that don’t sell or sell too cheap.

Market research helps you understand what to produce, when to produce, and who to sell to. It is the foundation of any profitable agribusiness.
Quick Fix:
•Visit major markets regularly to track demand and price trends.
•Use social media and online platforms to find out which crops are in high demand and connect with potential buyers before planting.
•Diversify your products if you notice market saturation in one area.

To build a thriving agribusiness in Nigeria, farmers must think beyond production. Planning, proper records, and market understanding are the foundation for profitability and growth.

By addressing these three major mistakes, agro-entrepreneurs can improve productivity, attract investors, and scale their farms sustainably.
